Rugat
is situated in the agricultural valley of Albaida, at nearly 400 meters above
sea level, surrounded by fields and at the foot of the hills. There are
less than 200 inhabitants, the majority farm the land covering the valley
floor and the foothills. The
village, once a Moorish stronghold, is very peaceful, has no through traffic,
except for the occasional tractor and an undisturbed siesta. There is a
church, a chemist, another restaurant and in the valley a small campsite.
Castelló de Rugat, 1 mile away, has all the necessary services. The old
palace, now a family home lies in oldest part of the village by the church
square, just next to the hotel. The early Spring brings to the village sweet
smells of almond blossom followed by plum, peach and apricot, by March the
orange blossom wafts through the streets. Rugat seems to form an integral
part of the surrounding countryside.
Rugat
lies 20 minutes from Gandia, 1
hour from Valencia and 90
minutes from Alicante.
